We decided to take a trip down south from Whiterun, after hearing stories of a dragon attacking Helgen. With our experience from the Soul Cairn, we knew that the scaly bastards were tough, but seeing the destruction these things can bring to bear on the towns in Skyrim. It’s mind-boggling.
In surveying the scene of such carnage, we found a journal on a burned corpse. It told of what happened here, and mentioned that there may be survivors. If that’s the case, we had to check out the nearby cave. Sure enough, we found Hadvar, an injured Imperial soldier. We gave him a healing potion, but something told me that just a potion wouldn’t be enough to completely heal his wounds. So, we escorted him to his uncle’s home in Riverwood. Slow trip, considering we had to take a couple of stops, so he could rest.
We finally reached Riverwood, where we stood and listened to Hadvar tell his uncle all about the dragon attack. This sounds serious. Serana leaned back into me, which is usually her way of saying, “Hold me”. I don’t know what we can do about these dragons. Hell, we’re just people, trying to get on with our lives. But, if there’s one thing we can do, it’s alert the Jarl of Whiterun that Riverwood will need extra security. We told Hadvar and Alvor that we’d go to Whiterun and speak to Jarl Balgruuf. After that, we set off for Whiterun.
Serana and I had a long talk on the way to Riverwood. We had just begun our lives, and here it is being turned upside down with this talk of dragons. I remember facing the one in the Soul Cairn, and the thought of facing more of them seemed to worry her. I can’t deny that it scares the shit out of me, too. It took every bit of strength I had to put down one dragon, and now, it seems like the Divines are putting us up against more of them. But, no matter what they put up against us, I have faith that we can see it through. We stopped Harkon, after all. But, there’s a big difference between a vampire and a dragon.
We finally reach Whiterun and make our way to the Jarl’s palace, Dragonsreach. After having his dunmer housecarl approach with sword drawn, we tell her about knowing about Helgen, and that Riverwood needs help. She lets us speak to the Jarl, and we tell him everything we know. We even show him the journal we found. That was enough to convince him. So, he asked us to do something for his court wizard, then introduced us to the guy. Farengar Secret-Fire. As mages go, he leaves a bit to be desired, which is probably why he’s hired on as a court mage. Serana’s better than this guy with the magic. But, I’m biased.
Apparently, this College of Winterhold dropout wants us to delve into Bleak Falls Barrow, west of Riverwood, and find the Dragonstone, interred in the main chamber. One look from Serana says, “This should be interesting, let’s do it.” So, we agree to the job and head out for Bleak Falls’s Barrow.
